What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are small, brown, oval shaped, wingless insects. They belong to the cimicid family which is a collection of small parasitic insects.

How big are bed bugs?

They can range in size from 1.5mm to 5mm, depending on the specific stage they’re at in their life cycle.

What is the bed bug life cycle?

Bed bugs, like many insects, go through a series of life cycle stages before reaching adulthood. Bed-bug-eggs, less than a millimetre in length, hatch into nymphs also known as baby bed bugs. These babies pass through five distinct life stages before maturing to adulthood.

At each stage of Bed-Bugs-life-cycle, the bugs need a blood meal in order to “molt”. The full bed-bug-life-cycle-process can take as little as 5 weeks and as long as 4-6 months. 

How long do the bugs live for?

Bugs can generally survive several months without food however, in certain conditions, some bugs can live up to 18 months between feeds!

What do bed bugs eat?
Human blood, primarily though they can feed on animals like dogs and cats. Bed bugs need our blood in order to grow and reproduce.

How do bed bugs get in my bed?

If you’re unfortunate enough to encounter bed bugs in someone else’s home or in a hotel, the bugs can hitch a ride on your clothes as well as material like bedding and suitcase linings.

How do I know if I have an infestation?
